Yes, it is true! Finally, I am here to present to you my mission-accomplished project that took about 2 weeks to finish. I know, you'll be in awe too thinking that I might have remade or recreated a whole or half the house to employ half a months' time to finish. hahaha. Well, just like most of the other moms out there, time is such a challenge to put everything together more so to write what you do on a regular basis and still keep up with the basic tasks we all ought to share in the home. Oh yeah I hear you. ;-)
So this project that I have successfully finished was our little girl's cabinets in her room. These were already installed when we got the house. It was all painted in white and literally needed some magic touch. Thanks to those butterfly mirror decals the room had atleast a touch of 'fun'. But as a year passed I seemed to feel the boredom in it.
Only a few weeks ago when I have learned about the amazing pinterest have I been so inspired and thought a change couldn't be that bad at all. With all the gifts that our princess has gotten from her 3 birthdays her stuffs were accumulating a little more. Thus, needing some space for keeping. One of the most that I really love to care for are her books. She loves them and I thought they deserve a better place. I perfectly visioned that the cabinets were the number one pick for it.
There are 3 cabinets mounted on the wall and I thought the middle could be the perfect storage solution. So I decided to take off the doors of the middle cabinet. Big thanks again to my dad who helped on detaching them. . I began to remove all the books from the cabinet and put them aside.
Here's how the cabinet looked. Notice too the butterfly decals...those were the ones I bought from ROSS a year ago. For some reason I did make so much attachment to them but they will have to go this time. ;-)
The next tricky part was the theme to use, which I must admit I am too bad at. I didn't want a character-themed room so I based it upon my color loves. Reading through lots of articles from pinterest and Better Homes and Garden I learned that a chalkboard was a product of chalk paint and I just love the idea of a chalkboard to be used into some other aesthetic purpose. I thought the feel of a 'blackboard' as how I grew up knowing it exudes some feel of wit and just partners perfectly with books. So off to my new best friend...the Home Depot to grab a quart of can chalk paint. Rust-Oleum was the one I saw but I am not sure that they carry other brands. A quart isn't really that expensive. It was about $13.00 with tax.
And since this was my first painting project (I have never painted anything in my whole life except water colors in prep school), I had to buy myself brushes. These were all from Home Depot and they were the cheapest ones. I bet the ones with pricey tags were really better but yours truly is on a tight budget so I bought the cheapest one; and for a beginner's end I think I should really start from scratch. I also did use a primer. This way the paint will have a good bonding on the surface of the wood.
Voila! Here it is after painting the inside chalk paint and labeling it using actual chalks with different colors.
But of course that is just the cake itself and I still needed to do something with the rest of the whites. Pink was our princess' favorite but I thought that something more neutral is better and just accentuate touches of pink in the end.
Because I am such a fan of green and I know that it will be a good combination of pink I decided that the cabinets will be green. I used sour apple green. I bought a quart in Walmart for about $9. Not bad for a starter kit I guess.
This was the first coat after about 10 minutes painting the whole thing.
This is how it was in second coat. I used a matte texture paint so it goes along with the chalk board paint texture.
So here it is, her 2-in-1 storage (cabinets/bookshelves).
I have yet to share to you the rest of the make-over for her room. I have rearranged her bed. We repainted her study table and chair. I bought a cute area rug to contrast with the green world. And lots and lots of reorganizing patterns I plan to do in those cabinets.
I can't wait to share them with you. ;-)
